THE THISTLE / ESPLANDE CARPARK - KIRKCALDY - FIFE

Kirkcaldy is a malevolent town that has created some real monsters. Birthplace of Adam Smith - the architect of free market capitalism, Jack Vettriano - Scotland most financially successful (paint by numbers) artist… And on top of all this it is also the birthplace of Guy Berryman the Bass player for FCKNG Coldplay! With this rap sheet it’s crimes to architecture seem small fry, however if I had to name my favourite carpark it would be the Esplanade carpark Kirkcaldy, mainly because it’s design is so incredulous but also because I’ve had some really good times here with my darling Popes. In my mind this mad carpark is a greater artistic achievement than any of Jack Vettriano’s painting’s or any of Coldplay’s bass lines. Is this carpark better than Free Market Capitalism? Hard comparison to make.

The design of this carpark is frankly astounding. There are a few theories on what it took it’s inspiration from, the first is that it pays homage to the medieval fortress of Ravenscraig Castle. The second is that it mirthfully apes the look of child’s sandcastle that they might build down on the beach front. Built in the 1980’s (possibly 1982) it pre dates Minecraft, but come on; this is Minecraft as FCK!

When I first visited this carpark it was still open and it was absolutely joyous parking in it. Kids were riding their bikes down the ramps, despite many signs saying ‘NO CYCLING’. Exploring this building was indeed a treat, we met the attendant on the ground floor. A stocky man, with milk bottle glasses and a very well worn high vis jacket despite the 20ºc heat. He was pretty taken a back when he asked what we were up to and I explained that I was interested in the building. I have been unable to find any details on who the architect was but they will be for ever know in my head as "‘The Minecraft Idiot”… Despite the insane slapped together aesthetic of this building it turns out that the structure is made of pre tensioned concrete and as such is incredibly robust. Given that this building’s look was build from cinderblock, the superstructure could have been repurposed but instead vast amounts of time and energy will be put into pulling in down. I don’t deny that these carparks live up to their local names of the ‘Ugly Sisters’ but as you will see in the photos below the bones of the building could have easily be repurposed into anything really. The councils plan for the site is not much of a plan at all, but it does look like there is much good being invested in along the rest of the waterfront. I’m not saying that the place doesn’t need re-developed but some joined up thinking could of saved vast amounts of energy.

As we were taught by Kirkcaldy native, Adam Smith in his Book The Wealth of Nations. He argues that free-market economies, driven by individual self-interest and regulated by competition, naturally self-regulate, maximise productivity, and generate widespread societal prosperity. I think it’s safe to say that free market capitalism has done really well at ‘driven by self interest’ part and less good at the ‘widespread societal prosperity’ part - What will late stage capitalism bring to Kirkaldy’s water front? Who can say? But I’ll keep my eye on it.

DEMOLITION AS OF MARCH 2026

Nikon FM2 - Voigtlander 28mm, Zeiss Planar 50mm - Eastman Kodak - Vision 3 - 500t (ecn2) FILM

With the Thistle completely demolished we got to see this previously hidden view of the Esplanade. Isn’t it beautiful?

The heavy set pretensioned concrete superstructure, pretty robust by the looks of it.You can see the thousands of jagged steel wires that were tensioned before the concrete was poured.

The original 1980’s parking full sign lays crumpled amongst the ruins. You can see props installed in between the pillars by the demolition crew. Apparently tearing these types of structures down is laborious and dangerous.

The space where the Thistle Car Park once lay. The lay out of these windows / openings is quite perplexing isn’t it. I love how little sense it makes.

The view from the Waterfront. Illuminated piles of steel cabling ape the shady ornamental bushes in the foreground.

Honestly in places the design is really quite cool, maybe not good but interesting. This is architecture I could dance to.

The light here is doing a good job of highlighting the geometery. The green mould sets off the fresh chipboard so nicely don’t you think? Please bear in mind that the windows on the left were that dirty before any demolition began. I think it is planning policy now that all buildings in Scotland have a layer of mould on them. The place has never been so mouldy. NEVER!!!

The seagulls in Kirkcaldy are pretty famous for being total bastards. They are as prickly as all that tensioned steel cable. The facebook page Fife Jammers has shown me some pretty mad sights from Kirkcaldy. Including an actual riot.

This partly demolished carpark is better than any of Jack Vettriano’s paintings… there are so many scathing quotes on Jack Vettriano. I will plaster them ignominiously around this photo essay.

This void in the walkway from the carparks to the Mercat Shopping Centre mirrors the void in Jack Vettriano’s talent.

THE ESPLANDE CARPARK IN JUNE 2022

Nikon D800 - Zeiss Distagon 25mm - DIGITAL

When me and Popes went to see Jack Vettriano’s retrospective in the Kirkcaldy Galleries the only painting I liked was of a couple kissing outside Cockenzie Power Station. Mainly because of the power station, at least it had some semblance of cultural identity.

I believe this dank little garden was a hot spot for crime and anti-social behaviour.

The more I look at this place the more I like it to be honest. Despite it’s imposing brutality it has this limp charisma. There is some sort of imagination at play and the forms can be appreciated in photos if not real life. This is way better than a coldplay bassline!

Abandoned home bargains trolley snags white polythene.

On Jack Vettriano

the art establishment treated him like a symptom of cultural decline.

MY ARGUMENT IS THAT THIS CARPARK IS A GREATER WORK OF CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE THAN ANYTHING THE ARTIST JACK VETTRIANO OR THE BAND COLDPLAY HAVE EVER CREATED.

BUT IT’s GONE NOW & I’m ONLY HALF JOKING.

AS FOR ADAM SMITH… HIS THEORIES FORMED MUCH OF THE BASIS OF THE THATCHERITE ERA…
AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT SHE DID TO FIFE.

A BIG THANKS TO THOSE WHO ARE DONATING, THIS HELPS SO MUCH WITH THE COSTS OF FREE MARKET CAPITALISM
