EXHIBITION AT THE CEILIDH PLACE, ULLAPOOL, 22nd JUNE - 8th AUGUST 2025

I first experienced the Ceilidh Place as a young teen when me and a few boys in the band got a gig playing music on the Stornaway ferry, can’t rememeber how long we stayed but it was a while. This hotel at the end of the a835 is like another home to me, I have had so many high times here, infinite deep and meaningful conversations and rubbed shoulders with celebrities and politicians. I love the Urquhart’s who run it and count them as extended family.

I feel very happy to be exhibiting here for the second time, my first exhibition here was all landscape photography. This exhibition is all paintings and drawings with an added bonus track, of expansive sound art I made at the bone caves at Inchnadamph.

The work presented here depicts stories and native curiosities from Ross, Coigach and Assynt. The work reflects my obsession with local history and the ancient makeup of what we call Highland Scotland. Every painting and drawing has a story associated with it. Some true and some ficticious.

For the full catalogue of works please see here… https://www.somhairle.co.uk/neither-war-lord-or-poet I will also keep this page updated with red dots as things sell 🤞

I’m hopeful that people will enjoy both the art and the stories associated with them. Although landscape and croft houses are well represented they are not presented in isolation form their own history and local importance. This I think makes a distinction from the well re-cycled tropes of sentimental, pictorial representation.

If you are interested in buying a painting without actually attending the Ceilidh Place, then please email art@theceilidhplace.com
